They say touch grass. I prefer dirt.

After a hard year and lots of life changes, one of the things I have found peace in is growing things. Getting outside means a lot to me. In a world suddenly thrust in the direction of creating artificial intelligence and other new types of technology, I find myself drawn to curating actual life just as much.

I used to grow many things years ago, but abandoned the ideas of growing things at scale since moving to Colorado. My ignorant assumption based on elevation and climate was that things do not grow well here, or at least take an extreme amount of effort. But I’ve recently found that with the right amount of care and love, certain things will grow very well!

I started a few months ago to bring my yard back to life by planting a few berry varieties that will thrive in Colorado’s climate. I began with a few raspberry bushes, and that quickly expanded to blackberries and blueberries. “Why stop there,” I thought, and have now planted two varieties of grapes, strawberries, hatch chilis, and heirloom tomatoes.

Herbs came next. I dropped some seeds into an old egg carton – sweet basil, oregano, thyme, mint, rosemary. A few weeks later, beautiful sprouts emerged. Unfortunately, while soaking up the spring sun one day, a hard gust of wind blew the containers across the yard and I lost them all. That was a sad day, but I’ll start over with them with a bit more caution.

Things are looking good now. As we’re moving into a very dry summer climate, they are all taking a lot of water, but mother nature has been helping so far.
